I’ve wanted to blog about this scripture for years, so now here I am.
When I had first read this scripture, I knew I needed to fully understand its meaning. The picture I chose for this blog was exactly how I imagined a frail hand made jar of clay would look like. I understood that a jar of clay doesn’t make itself, the potter does (God)Jeremiah 18:1-6 Here we understand he shapes us into who we should be, even at times having to reshape us. We, like the jar, come in all different shapes and sizes, all refined in the fire and all easily broken. What’s incredible is that it’s not so much “we” the clay as it is what is inside, what we’re entrusted with…God himself! His very own Spirit and the message of salvation (the treasure) lives within this fragile easily broken life. We are entrusted with this “Treasure”. I don’t know about you but I sure am humbled by this knowledge.
So what can we say about this new understanding?
Speaking for myself I can say; “Really? Why me? If you look too closely I probably have cracks and chips maybe even some broken pieces around the edges” and yet, He has chosen to stay. I can rest in knowing he made me even with my cracks, chips and broken pieces, (fragile) because He’s the one that is my strength, I have to depend on him to stay intact. He holds me together, and when He shines through all those cracks and chips what a beautiful design the light makes out into the world. There’s new meaning when the scripture says: “to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us” it’s all Him!
I understand now what this verse is saying: 2 Corinthians 4:7 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay” I hope that you too will treasure what we have been entrusted with, the good news, God with us…He is our strength! Salvation is for everyone. We can go out into the world as fragile jars of clay having the confidence knowing He is holding this jar of clay made by His own hands.
